FOSPO awarded contract for the BMS 2030 International Symposium on Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming
The 16th International Symposium on Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming (BMS) will take place in 2030 at the state-of-the-art swimming centre of the National Youth Sports Centre Tenero (CST), which will have been completed by then. This was decided by the event’s International Committee in mid-September 2026 in Porto Alegre (BRA). The Swiss Federal Institute of Sport in Magglingen (SFISM) will contribute its expertise, particularly in facilitating knowledge transfer between science and practice.
This prestigious international symposium takes place every four years and brings together around 400 experts from science, sports and practice from over 30 countries. It focuses on the latest findings in biomechanics and sports medicine, and their application in training and competitive sports.
State-of-the-art aquatics centre in Tenero
The Centro Sportivo Tenero (CST) provides an ideal venue. Scheduled for completion by 2030, this state-of-the-art facility includes indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a counter-current system, a hydraulically adjustable diving platform, and cutting-edge technologies for motion and data analysis. The new aquatic centre will set new standards, particularly in data-driven performance analysis, and thus offers optimal conditions for an international symposium at the intersection of science, technology and competitive sports.
SFISM as a bridge-builder between science and practice
Under the motto ‘Science Meets Practice’, the aim is to promote exchange between research, coaching and athletics, and to strengthen the transfer of knowledge into practice. SFISM contributes its scientific expertise and many years of experience at the interface between sports science and competitive sports, helping to make current research findings applicable to international sports practice.
Partnerships for BMS 2030 and beyond
The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) will play a key role as a scientific partner alongside the Federal Office of Sport (FOSPO), the organising body under whose umbrella SFISM and CST operate. The collaboration with SUPSI extends beyond the symposium and also includes the development of sports science services that will be available to all competitive athletes in water sports at CST’s new aquatic centre.
Swiss Aquatics, the national governing body for aquatic sports, is also participating as a partner and contributing the practical perspective of competitive and elite sports. Swiss Coach Education further integrates the coaching and trainer perspective.
